In this audacious follow-up, Piketty challenges us to revolutionize how we think about politics, ideology, and history. Markets, profits, and capital are all historical constructs that depend on choices.
Capital and Ideology. Distribution of wealth and power overtime. How the rich managed to escape time and again
A very interesting well written book. How did we arrive at our current societal structure overtime? Thomas Piketty a French economist focuses on the shift from a tripartite society consisting of clergy, nobility and labourers (serfs) via ownership societies , slave societies, colonial societies to social-democratic societies. His 1093 book was translated into English in 2020.
Piketty descibes developments in France, England, Sweden, the US, India, China and Japan. He thoroughly analyses how income and wealth have been distributed overtime. What measures have been taken to reduce inequality: Income, wealth and inheritance taxes? Whilst the gap between the top 10% highest income earners and the bottom 50% has widened in the USA convergence took place in Western Europe.
An intriguing book, which has given me more insight in the history and current status in the distribution of wealth.
Hefty tome examining the forces behind inequality.
Heavy going in places - definitely not a 'holiday read'! - but a well written and interesting look at inequality through sociological, political, and economic lenses.
