1902 macht sich der Mediziner Ludwig Kulz auf in den Togo, damals deutsche Kolonie, um dort als Tropenarzt zu arbeiten. Von unterwegs schreibt er Briefe, in denen er ausfuhrlich das dortige Leben, die fur ihn faszinierende Tier- und Pflanzenwelt sowie die einheimische Bevoelkerung beschreibt. Kulz scheut sich nicht vor engem Kontakt zu den Togoern, lernt so ihre Kultur und ihre Traditionen zu schatzen. Dennoch unterscheidet er klar zwischen sich und den Afrikanern und spricht von seiner Mission als Erzieher der Togoer. Sein Fazit: Afrika ist das Land der Widerspruche, des Werdens, der Neugestaltung, der inneren und ausseren Gegensatze [...] Es kann keine interessanteren und eigenartigeren Landschaftsbilder geben als die afrikanischen, aber auch die trostlosesten und langweiligsten Einoeden sind hier zu finden. Nirgends brennt die Sonne heisser als in Afrika, und nirgends kann man erbarmlicher frieren als hier. Seine Frau entschied sich, seine Briefe zu veroeffentlichen, da er so genau und unvoreingenommen wie kein anderer vor ihm die Situation in der Kolonie Togo beschrieb. Seine Briefe uberlieferten neues Wissen uber Tropenkrankheiten, das dortige Klima und die Hygiene nach Deutschland und waren daruber hinaus wegweisend im Bezug auf die Definition des Berufs des Tropenarztes.
