Diese bengalischstammigen Erzahler, Anhanger der ethnischen Gruppe der Patua (von pat, Bildrolle ), sind die Schoepfer und Trager einer Kunstform, die sich von Indien weit bis nach Ost- und Sudostasien verbreiten sollte. Ziel der Arbeit ist es, diese Tradition in ihren verschiedenen Facetten zu skizzieren und den Prozess ihrer Transformation aufzuzeichnen: Von ihrer ursprunglichen Lehrfunktion uber ihre Instrumentalisierung im indischen Nationalismus bis hin zu ihrer heutigen, kommerzialisierten Form. Es ist zudem von Interesse, zu welchem Zeitpunkt und unter welchen Bedingungen das Handwerk der Patua, zunachst nur eine folkloristische Ausdrucks- und Kommunikationsform, asthetisiert und in die Hierarchie der indischen Volkskunste aufgenommen wurde.
