Der Junge wachst stiefmutterlich auf. Der Vater, Fleischermeister mit Tunnelblick, lasst ihn groesstenteils nur Harte spuren. Aber Albert ist ein Starker. Er wird mehr als der Vater. Vor allem ist er mit wachem Geiste begabt. Leider auch mit einem Willen, der ihn unerbittlich macht. Mit 23 Jahren hat er 1890 sein eigenes Geschaft und eine liebreizende Frau. Sie wird ihm funf Kinder schenken und als Seele des Geschaftes hohes Ansehen erlangen. Aber der Meister zerstoert sie allmahlich durch seine Brutalitat. Die zwingt den jungsten Sohn sogar zur Flucht. Mit 15 Jahren verschwindet der und kurz vor dem Russland-Feldzug , 21 Jahre spater, kommt es zum ersten und letzten Treffen mit dem Vater. Einsicht und Reue erfassen den Alten. Als seine beiden Enkel fallen , wird er zum verzweifelten Anklager, wenn auch nur in der Kneipe. Eine flussig verfasste Erzahlung von der burgerlichen Fassade und dem Dahinter. Man erfahrt sogar, wie fruher Salami oder Buchsenfleisch furs kaiserliche Heer gemacht wurde und, wie man nach der Inflation noch zwanzig Jahre als Privatier gut leben konnte.
