Urauffuhrung am 2.3.1808 in Weimar. Vollstandige Neuausgabe mit einer Biographie des Autors. Herausgegeben von Karl-Maria Guth. Berlin 2015. Textgrundlage ist die Ausgabe: Heinrich von Kleist: Werke und Briefe in vier Banden. Herausgegeben von Siegfried Streller in Zusammenarbeit mit Peter Goldammer und Wolfgang Barthel, Anita Golz, Rudolf Loch, Berlin und Weimar: Aufbau, 1978. Die Paginierung obiger Ausgabe wird in dieser Neuausgabe als Marginalie zeilengenau mitgefuhrt. Umschlaggestaltung von Thomas Schultz-Overhage unter Verwendung des Bildes: Daumier Honore, Drei Anwalte im Gesprach, 1848. Gesetzt aus Minion Pro, 11 pt. UEber den Autor: 1777 in Frankfurt an der Oder als Offizierssohn geboren, tritt Bernd Wilhelm Heinrich von Kleist 1792 selbst in den Militardienst und nimmt am Rheinfeldzug gegen die franzoesische Republik teil. Zum Leutnant befoerdert, quittiert er 1799 den Militardienst und studiert Rechtswissenschaften in Frankfurt an der Oder. Die Lekture von Kants Schriften lasst sein rationalistisches Weltbild zerbrechen und loest eine Lebenskrise aus. Nach zahlreichen Reisen lebt er langere Zeit in Paris und in der Schweiz, wo u.a. sein popularstes Stuck Der zerbrochene Krug entsteht. Nach Stationen in Leipzig und Dresden und Weimar tritt er in Berlin in den preussischen Staatsdienst ein. Mit dem militarischen Zusammenbruch Preussens gerat Kleist 1806 in mehrmonatige franzoesische Gefangenschaft. 1808 beginnt er mit der Herausgabe der Monatsschrift Phoebus. Ein Journal fur die Kunst. Die Urauffuhrung des zerbrochenen Kruges in einer Bearbeitung von Goethe am Hoftheater in Weimar wird zu einem Misserfolg. Kleist begeistert sich fur die patriotischen Schriften von Ernst Moritz Arndt, scheitert mit dem Plan, unter dem Namen Germania eine politische Wochenzeitschrift mit nationaler Ten
