Ein wohlhabender Wirt will fur seinen Sohn die gute Partie der beguterten Kaufmannstochter. Hermann verliebt sich jedoch in Dorothea, ein mittelloses Madchen der vorbeiziehenden Fluchtlingsschar, will nur sie freien. Die Mutter steht ihrem Sohn bei. Pfarrer und Apotheker, Freunde der Wirtsfamilie, werden ausgesandt, um Erkundigungen uber das Madchen einzuziehen, die durchweg gunstig ausfallen. Weil Hermann es aber, aus Angst vor einem Korb, nicht wagt, Dorothea seine Liebe zu gestehen, verpflichtet er sie nur als Magd und fuhrt sie in sein Elternhaus.
