Smart Specialisation ist ein neues Konzept der Europaischen Union, das Regionen ermoeglicht, Wachstum zu erzielen, indem sie ihre standortspezifischen Starken und Wettbewerbsvorteile im Bereich der Technologie und Forschung erkennen und sich gezielt auf diese spezialisieren. Das Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es, zu erarbeiten, inwiefern das Konzept Smart Specialisation auf das Ruhrgebiet zu ubertragen ist. Es ist zu untersuchen, ob und welche Chancen der Entwicklung fur diese Region damit einhergehen koennen. Einleitend werden die Begrifflichkeiten der Regional- und Innovationspolitik erlautert und differenziert. Zudem werden Marktversagenstatbestande aufgegriffen. Das zweite Kapitel befasst sich ausschliesslich mit der Begrifflichkeit der Innovationspolitik der EU, ruckblickend wie auch gegenwartig. Im dritten Kapitel wird das Konzept Smart Specialisation vorgestellt und anschliessend durch ein Praxisbeispiel nahergebracht. Daraufhin wird die Frage, inwiefern Smart Specialisation eine Blaupause fur die Entwicklung des Ruhrgebiets sein kann, bearbeitet. Um diese Frage zu beantworten, befasst sich dieses Kapitel intensiv mit den Gegebenheiten dieser Region, erlautert die Chancen und Risiken und stellt diese gegenuber. Das funfte Kapitel beendet die Arbeit schliesslich mit der Zusammenfassung der zentralen Inhalte und einer Stellungnahme.
