(8 inches refers to the "length of the jaws" not the "width of the spread apart" like I thought) I love that you can remove the handle and attach a ratcheting tool to the top. They're quite heavy for the size and appear robust but obviously I have to try them. The threads seem very good and clean and unscrew easily but securely and I love the spring loaded ball bearings on each end that keep the jaws from coming off
