Originally conceived as a BBC play, The Onedin Line soon set sail as a series charting the fortunes of a shipping family in late 19th-century Liverpool. The saga ran in the UK from 1971 to 1980, gaining huge audiences and becoming one of the favourite shows of the decade. It sold to more than 60 countries around the world and is still one of BBC Worldwide's top-grossing programmes today. James Onedin, seasoned sailor with "ambition enough for an army of Napoleons", decides to purchase his first ship and marries Anne, the seller's daughter in order to do so. Launching into the hazardous, cut-throat world of trade and shipping, he soon finds it's not all plain sailing - business rivals, uninsured cargo, an awkward crew, mounting debts and sometimes even the very elements themselves seem to conspire against him.Series Two finds James in an optimistic mood, despite having lost a ship on the Cape. The American Civil War has ended, bringing new opportunities for shipping trade, however his unending harshness to his men forces Anne to choose between her loyalty to her husband, and the striking seamen's families, whom she supports. Plotting to outwit the strikers, James gives Anne an ultimatum that forces her to leave...but can she survive as a woman alone?
