  • An intriguing title reflecting politics of the day.

A surprisingly fascinating insight into many of the characters, politics and maritime goals of Britain and European powers during the 18th century which were instrumental in the search for and discovery of new lands. As such it does not concentrate on Cook but the pressures influencing his decisions and personality, all providing support for the author's contention that deceptive logs had been contrived. Quality paper and illustrations are an added bonus.

  • A close shave for British interests in Australia.

The author's research is impeccable and her conclusions are almost certainly quite correct, as can be expected from her experience as a lawyer, a former visiting fellow at the University of NSW and the author of Supreme and District Courts Practice (1982, Law Book Co). Over the years I have had misgivings about Captain Cook "missing" Bass Strait and Sydney Harbour, while insisting that Botany Bay was the appropriate place for a future Settlement. With the author explaining the background of past experiences in the Canada area, I can appreciate the reasons for his reluctance to mention those important places thus protecting British interests. If he hadn't been successful, Australia's language could very well have been French. As it happens it was a close shave as well.

  • Captain Cook deliberately fakes his data to protect the Kingdom

I am a huge fan of the great Captain Cook. Yet there are so many questions about some of the "simple" mistakes he made about what are referred to as his errors. This book explains how and why he did what he did. A great book, that managed to get from my local library and have read and re-read many times, and sared the story in discussions at my local Pub.. Now i am glad I have my own copy.
